A BIT ABOUT #GES2018

The Girls Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) is an annual tech-entrepreneurship event co-hosted by Apps and Girls and the US Embassy in Dar es Salaam for girls in secondary and high school in Tanzania to connect, learn and build innovations and solutions for community problems as well as compete for prizes.

It’s the country’s first big event that inspires innovation and creativity for girls through technology.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE #GES2018 PROGRESS

In 2018 we had more than 30 projects that were imagined, ideated and developed by about 100 students from 25 schools in Dar es salaam and and one school from Iringa (under Lyra organization in Tanzania). These were schools we selected to participate in the GES 2018 summit. Among these projects, 23 have passed to compete for prizes on the summit (Nov 9-10th).

Most of the girls we train and mentor are from neighborhoods with no opportunities, attending schools with limited facilities – particularly computing facilities. As such a case, most of the projects developed by girls targets at addressing problems related to their communities, such as poor education, gender issues, environmental challenges. In a more clear analysis, the projects directly touches many aspects of the SDGs.

The digital gender divide looms large in Tanzania with fewer women accessing ICTs and IT training. Turning this situation around can benefit women and drive economic growth, innovations, social and environmental development.

TRAINING

Selected participants create teams in their respective schools, teams got matched with mentors and spend four months of training and developing tech-driven businesses.

PROTOTYPE

Teams work with their technical and business mentors and experts in building prototypes for their tech-driven business ideas.

PITCHING

Girls engage in round table discussions with experts, female business leaders, listen to inspiring speeches and participate in the final pitch

Do you want your school to participate in the next summit?

Schools with computer infrastructure adopt the Tech-preneurship curriculum (Coding, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship + Design Thinking) and at the end of the year, they pitch or exhibit their tech-driven businesses or innovations during the Girls Summit.

Contact us regarding opening a Coding Club at your school and let teachers or our trainers conduct weekly trainings.

WORD FROM THE SUMMIT LEAD

With this year’s theme “Girls in tech breaking barriers” we have seen a massive response from girls in secondary who want to participate, we are very grateful for the support from teachers and parents and look forward to a transformative summit this year.
